nature wandering

On a beautiful Fall day, my husband and I meandered around the Cincinnati Nature Center.  We inhaled October's loveliness and delighted in its abundant gifts.

Here are a few snippets from that hike.

milkweed II

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)

This plant is the larval host for monarch and queen butterflies.  It's also an important food source for native bees, honey bees, and bumble bees.  I'm proud to say I grew this plant from seed.  It has spread in my yard just a little bit.

"Butterflies of the Caribbean" is the current show at Cincinnati's Krohn Conservatory.  The garden room is alight with fluttering butterflies!  delightful!  Some even land on people.

magic

Mossy Magic
Late January.  A gentle snow had frosted the landscape with a sugar-ice coating.  Eight friends embarked on a hike through a gorgeous forest enjoying the Wintery loveliness.
(hike to Natural Bridge, Red River Gorge, Kentucky)

Butterfly Magic
A young girl marvels at the loveliness of the pretty butterfly landing on her fingers.

Sunrise Magic
I rarely see sunrises, and this one from an airplane was awesome!

Kitty Magic
Oliver is so charming as well as the sweetest!

Flower Magic
Two black eyed susans grew together creating this strange and curious flower.  The other side (which you cannot see) looks exactly like this side.

Alphabe-Thursday, hosted by Ms Jenny, is so much fun!  This week our letter is  "M."  Come visit others' submissions HERE and join in the fun!

butterflies (number two)

Buttterflies taste with their feet and drink nectar with their proboscis, a straw-like tongue.
This is a Julia (Dryas iulia). It is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida. In summer, it can be found straying north into the central US. This butterfly feeds on the nectar of flowers such as lantana. Its caterpillars feed on the leaves of passion vines. It belongs to the family brush-footed butterflies (Nymphalidae). This photo was taken in April at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Here is my post butterflies ( number one).

Spring

Spring is an experience of immortality. I love Spring. The earth bursts into song, going from seeming dispair to riotous joy.
... an April hike in the North Carolina mountains near Asheville in 2006....Four of us spent many serene moments watching a stream of ants laboring to carry a few huge crumbs through their secret tunnel to their underground nest.

... a display at the 2008 Cincinnati Flower Show...The Cincinnati Flower Show is awesome! It is probably the largest flower show in North America, and the only North American show endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain. Better Homes and Gardens honored it as the "King of all flower shows." One's spirit is renewed while walking among the many acres of flowers, a feast for the senses. Oh the colors, the smells! Glorious Spring has arrived!
This year will be the 20th anniversary of the show.

Eden Park's Krohn Conservatory is a nationally recognized showcase of more than 3,500 plant species from all over the world. The palm, tropical, desert and orchid houses exhibit permanent displays of exotic plants in natural settings, complete with a 20 foot rainforest waterfall. It is a garden paradise under glass.
